NUGGETS Petro gets new chance to grow
The Nuggets renewed their insurance policy on Thursday, re-signing reserve center Johan Petro, who at worst is a commodity as a 7-footer, and at best could develop into a reliable role player.

Petro, 23, signed a one-year, league-minimum deal for $825,000, multiple sources said.

On paper, the move looks great - a young, budding post player, signed for the league minimum. Not much risk. Will he show enough improvement that coach George Karl is able to trust him come playoff time? That's a question Denver and its fans hope is answered in the affirmative.

Petro came to Denver in a Jan. 7 trade with Oklahoma City and played in 27 games, averaging 2.2 points and 2.3 rebounds. His best game was Feb. 23 against the Boston Celtics, when he scored nine points and snatched 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes.

The Nuggets were rather fortunate last season not to lose any post players to serious injury, a problem that had plagued Denver in the past. This coming season, Petro again will back up Nene, Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen. The Nuggets also acquired post Malik Allen this summer in the Sonny Weems trade.

Denver has filled 12 of its 13 roster spots heading into camp, which begins in late September. The Nuggets are still working the phones, discussing potential acquisitions for a shooting guard or a small forward to come off the bench.
