Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-07-25

DRAFT PICKS:

Ty Lawson, G, 5-11, North Carolina (first round, acquired by Nuggets after being drafted by Minnesota) -- Nuggets like him because he brings youth to point guard, where the Nuggets have starter Chauncey Billups, 33 in September, and Anthony Carter, 34, likely to be re-signed as a free agent. In several years, he could replace Billups as the starter.

Sergio Llull, G, 6-3, Spain (second round) -- The Nuggets traded his rights to Houston for cash. After acquiring first-round selection Ty Lawson from Minnesota on draft night, the Nuggets felt they didn't need another rookie.

PLAYER NEWS:

--G Arron Afflalo is considered a key addition by the Nuggets. He will replace shooting guard Dahntay Jones, who bolted to Indiana as a free agent. Afflalo, acquired from Detroit, figures to battle J.R. Smith for the starting shooting guard job. "Arron is a proven NBA defender with an incredible work ethic," said Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien.

--F Kenyon Martin is very pleased with the makeup of the Nuggets' team. However, there's one thing Martin believes the team still needs. "I still feel like we have the best team," Martin said. "We didn't win it (the championship), but in my heart (the Nuggets are the best)... The only thing that we could use is a drop-dead shooter. Just a drop-dead shooter. Other than that, we've got a great team."

--F Carmelo Anthony invited to his summer basketball camp a 17-year-old who recently had undergone a heart transplant. Also, the Nuggets donated a basketball hoop, complete with a glass backboard, to a Ronald McDonald House in the Denver area where Joshua Herrman, of Wichita, Kan., had been staying. "It was great," Herrman said of the experience of going to Anthony's camp. "It was awesome."

MEDICAL WATCH:

--C Nene suffered a broken forearm in the Nuggets' playoff finale May 29 against the Los Angeles Lakers. But he's expected to be ready for training camp.
