Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-03-01

Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-03-01
ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Chauncey Billups, Shooting guard Dahntay Jones, Small forward Carmelo Anthony, Power forward Kenyon Martin, Center Johan Petro. Bench -- Guard J.R. Smith, Guard Anthony Carter, Center Chris Andersen, Forward Linas Kleiza, Center Nene.

PLAYER NOTES:

--F Chris Andersen again had 12 rebounds Friday against the Lakers after reaching that season-high mark Wednesday against Atlanta. Andersen also blocked a season-high seven shots in playing perhaps his best game of the campaign. After the game, Nuggets coach George Karl "thanked the Gods" that the Nuggets last summer were able to come up with Andersen as a replacement for departed shot-blocking stud Marcus Camby.

--C Nene returned Friday against the Lakers after missing two games with a bone bruise in his right knee, and didn't look rusty at all. In 20 minutes, Nene shot 3-of-4 for eight points and grabbed seven rebounds. Nene was limited to about 20 minutes of playing time, and Nuggets coach George Karl had wanted to save him for down the stretch, which he did. But that was more difficult after Nene, who came off the bench, had to come in after starting center Johan Petro picked up three fouls in less than three minutes.

--F Carmelo Anthony didn't look like himself in the second half Friday against the Lakers. He shot 0-of-6 and scored just two of his 12 points for the game. Anthony has been banged up and he looked worn down on offense in the second half. But Anthony didn't let that affect his rebounding, grabbing a respectable five of his 12 for the game in the second half.

--G J.R. Smith has been struggling lately from three-point range. After shooting 1-of-8 Friday against the Lakers, Smith has shot just 5-of-25 (20 percent) the past four games. But at least Smith was strong inside the arc Friday. He shot 5-of-6 en route to scoring 22 points.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--C Steven Hunter (right knee surgery) hasn't played since the first preseason game. He underwent surgery Nov. 14, and is expected to return in early March at the soonest.
