Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-11-06

Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-11-06ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Chauncey Billups, Shooting guard Anthony Carter, Small forward Carmelo Anthony, Power forward Kenyon Martin, Center Nene. Bench -- Center Chris Andersen, Guard Arron Afflalo, Forward Joey Graham, Guard Ty Lawson.

PLAYER NOTES:

--G Ty Lawson was picked just No. 18 in the draft, but few rookies are off to a better start. Lawson, who was taken by Minnesota and traded to the Nuggets on draft night, scored a career-high 23 points Wednesday at New Jersey. Lawson is averaging 11.8 points, and eventually should press Anthony Carter for the backup point guard role.

It's not an issue until J.R. Smith, who has missed five games so far, returns from a seven-game suspension, since Carter now is starting at shooting guard.

--C Chris Andersen was second in the NBA in blocked shots last season with an average of 2.46 per game. But blocks have been hard to come by this season for Andersen, who has just five in five games. It's obviously early, though. Nuggets coach George Karl said the Nuggets did open up the season against some physical teams, and that's not the best type of game for Andersen, who prefers to go up and down the court.

--G J.R. Smith, who already has served five games of his seven-game suspension for pleading guilty to reckless driving for a 2007 car accident that killed a passenger in his car, has accompanied the Nuggets on the first two games of their six-game road trip. Smith does work on the side with coaches, but is not allowed in the arena for games once it's two hours before tip-off. Smith will make his season debut Nov. 10 at Chicago.
