Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-10-16

Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-10-16ANALYZING STARTERS:

G Chauncey Billups turned 33 during the offseason, but he's showing no signs of slowing down. One reason is the heady Billups doesn't rely on great quickness and jumping ability. The Nuggets were a completely different team after the acquisition of Billups last November, and his presence should continue to pay big dividends.

G Arron Afflalo's NBA scoring average of 4.3 in two seasons doesn't impress anybody. But the Nuggets believe they were able to pick up a great talent over the summer from Detroit, which dumped Afflalo in an attempt to shed salary. The Nuggets believe Afflalo has all-around skills, being able to score when necessary and play solid defense.

F Carmelo Anthony saw his scoring average go down last season, but he became a better all-around player. Anthony is very content in Denver and wants to sign a long-term extension with the team next summer. He's likely the top small forward in the Western Conference.

F Kenyon Martin, who has spent the past few seasons coming back from knee problems, says he hasn't felt this good in years. Martin vows he can be more of a scoring threat this season. With the departure of forward Linas Kleiza in free agency, the Nuggets perhaps could use a bit more offense from Martin.

C Nene has a shot to be the starting center for the West in the All-Star Game, with Houston's Yao Ming being out for the season because of an injury and Shaquille O'Neal moving from Phoenix to Cleveland in the Eastern Conference. Nene surprised even himself last season as he bounced back from having testicular cancer in 2007-08. He could take an even bigger jump this season.

ANALYZING KEY RESERVES:

G J.R. Smith, who vows every season that he has matured, now says it really has happened after he spent 23 days in jail during the summer due to pleading guilty to reckless driving for a 2007 car accident that killed a passenger. Smith, who was second last season in voting for the NBA Sixth Man Award, should continue to be one of the league's top reserves.

F-C Chris Andersen bounced back strong last season in his first full year after sitting out between January 2006 and March 2008 due to an NBA drug suspension. Andersen's energy ignites the Nuggets, which is why the team re-signed him as a free agent to a long-term contract.

G Anthony Carter doesn't put up much in the way of statistics, but Nuggets coach George Karl loves that he's such a team player. Carter is the backup point guard and should hold onto that role, even though the Nuggets have an up-and-coming rookie in Ty Lawson.

MEDICAL WATCH:

None.
