Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-09-19

Denver Nuggets Roster Report 2009-09-19PLAYER NEWS:

--F Carmelo Anthony, who won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2008 Olympics, this fall will talk with USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo, who will ask Anthony if he wants to be part of Team USA for the 2010 World Championships. Colangelo is asking all holdovers from the Olympics how they stand. Anthony has been noncommittal. Seven players from the Olympics told Colangelo at the NBA All-Star Game last February they will play next year in Turkey, but Anthony wasn't picked for the All-Star Game.

--C Nene, who suffered a broken arm in the Nuggets' final playoff game May 29, did not play for his native Brazil in the recent Americas qualifying tournament for the World Championships in Puerto Rico. However, with Brazil having qualified, Nene no doubt will be looked at to play in the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. Nene played for Brazil in the 2007 Americas Olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas after not having played internationally since the 2003 Americas Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico.

--F Renaldo Balkman will be looked at this season to play more at small forward. Last season, Balkman was primarily a power forward. But, with the Nuggets having lost wing players Linas Kleiza and Dahntay Jones during the summer in free agency, Balkman will be counted on to be more versatile.

DRAFT PICKS:

Ty Lawson, G, 5-11, North Carolina (first round, acquired by Nuggets after being drafted by Minnesota) -- Nuggets like him because he brings youth to point guard, where the Nuggets have starter Chauncey Billups, 33 in September, and Anthony Carter, 34, likely to be re-signed as a free agent. In several years, he could replace Billups as the starter.

Sergio Llull, G, 6-3, Spain (second round) -- The Nuggets traded his rights to Houston for cash. After acquiring first-round selection Ty Lawson from Minnesota on draft night, the Nuggets felt they didn't need another rookie.
