Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2009-08-21
--F Walter Sharpe wasn't a Nugget for very long. The Nuggets acquired Sharpe from Detroit along with G Arron Afflalo on July 13 for a second-round pick. But 18 days after that deal, the Nuggets shipped Sharpe and G Sonny Weems to Milwaukee for F Malik Allen.

Sharpe has a serious knee injury and may not play next season, so he didn't factor in Denver's plans. However, his $736,420 salary is guaranteed for next season.

But Milwaukee was willing to make the deal because only $175,000 of Weems' $736,420 salary is guaranteed for next season. With Allen making $1.3 million, if the Bucks let Weems go by the Aug. 15 date in which his salary becomes guaranteed, they would save nearly $400,000.

The Nuggets were willing to take on a little extra money in getting a veteran big man in the 6-foot-10 Allen, who has averaged 5.4 points in eight seasons. He is in line to become the team's fourth post player after starters Nene and Kenyon Martin and top reserve Chris Andersen.

--The Nuggets continue to pursue unrestricted free-agent G Anthony Carter, who has been offered a minimum deal worth $1.3 million. Carter is seeking a multi-year contract, but hasn't had much luck this summer.

An indication that the Nuggets are hopeful they will be able to re-sign Carter came recently when the Nuggets allowed point guard Marcus Williams to make a commitment to sign with Memphis. The Nuggets had been targeting Williams as a possibility if Carter wasn't going to return. However, the Nuggets continued to put Williams off and he got tired of waiting and committed to the Grizzlies.

Carter, 34, was Denver's primary starter in 2007-08 and was the primary backup last season to Chauncey Billups. While some believe rookie Ty Lawson has a chance to play key minutes, the Nuggets want the security of a veteran such as Carter around if Lawson is not quick in his development.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think everybody was waiting to see when was I going to blossom? What was I going to do? I think this year started everything and put everything in perspective." -- F Carmelo Anthony, coming off a season in which his Nuggets won two playoff series after losing in the first round in his first five seasons.
