Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2009-11-06

Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2009-11-06--The Nuggets were determined to make up for last season's debacle at New Jersey, and F Kenyon Martin perhaps had the most incentive.

Martin, you see, played for the Nets from 2000-04, helping lead them to two NBA Finals. But the Nets, not wanting to give Martin close to a maximum contract, sent him to Denver in a sign-and-trade deal in July 2004. So Martin has no problem with getting all the revenge he can against the Nets.

Last season was hardly in that category. The Nuggets were blasted 114-70 at New Jersey, with Martin shooting 2-of-7 for four points.

But Martin made up for that in a big way Wednesday. He scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Nuggets won 122-94 at the IZOD Center.

The rout gave Martin plenty of minutes to rest. That was important since the Nuggets were playing the second game of a back-to-back situation.

It was the fifth game Martin has played in New Jersey since he was traded, and it his best effort so far. Missing the game in 2006-07 due to injury, Martin had averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in the previous four trips back.

--The Nuggets needed to find some extra offense when G J.R. Smith was lost for the first seven games of the season due to an NBA suspension. They're getting it from Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony averaged 22.8 points last season while Smith put up 15.2 per game. With Smith out, Anthony has raised his scoring average to 32.0 points per game.

"We need him," Nuggets coach George Karl said of the increase. "We have a little of bit of a hole with J.R. not playing."

Anthony is in great physical shape. But what Karl says he also has been bringing the Nuggets is a court awareness that comes with now being a seven-year pro.

"Melo's awareness to how he's being covered is the best it's ever been," Karl said. "It's his ability to move around and be placed in different positions and his effective efficiency. His efficiency is pretty incredible right now. From post-ups to jump shots to penetrations, good passing decisions."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This can be a special season." -- F Carmelo Anthony, with his team off to a 5-0 start, its best since 1985-86.
