Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2009-10-08

Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2009-10-08--F Carmelo Anthony has confirmed he will play for Team USA in next year's World Championships in Turkey. Anthony gave the final word in mid-September after seeing USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo at the Hall of Fame inductions in Springfield, Mass.

"I just told him that I was in," said Anthony, a key member of Team USA's gold-medal winning Olympic team last year in Beijing. "There wasn't really (anything) to it. He asked me what I thought. He asked me about the team. I told him I was in."

Colangelo has welcomed the news Anthony would return to the team.

Anthony also reiterated he wants to play in the 2012 Olympics in London. It would mark his third Olympics appearance, the first being getting a bronze medal in 2004 in Athens.

"I'm trying to get the World Championship gold medal, the (Olympic) gold medal (from Beijing) and another gold medal (from London)," he said.

--The Nuggets have picked up two wing players on nonguaranteed contracts who will battle it out in training camp for a likely roster spot. They acquired James White in a trade with Houston and signed free agent Joey Graham.

Nuggets coach George Karl never has been a fan of a team having too many players with guaranteed contracts. The Nuggets have just 12, but will have to open the season with at least 13 players on the roster.

"I think the subconscious celebration of the NBA is when everybody plays hard, and I think guaranteed contracts stop players from playing hard all the time," Karl said. "As a coach, we care (most about) playing hard.

"I've actually yelled at players, 'Why are you so worried about guaranteed money? You're good enough to play without guaranteed money.' Guaranteed money is kind of a security blanket that our players have been given over the last 20 to 30 years. But I'm not necessarily thinking it's been good for the game."

Karl, though, believes having nonguaranteed players White and Graham fight it out for a roster spot could be good for the Nuggets.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I joked the other day with (Tim Grgurich) and Jamahl Mosley. I'm going to get suspended in the first month of the season. I'm going to have 15 technicals in the first month just for the simple fact (that the replacement officials) don't know how I run my mouth." -- F Kenyon Martin, on what he said to two Nuggets assistants about perhaps starting the regular season with the NBA having replacement officials.
