Denver Nuggets Notes, Quotes 2008-10-24
--G Allen Iverson long has been one of the NBA's most durable players, and appeared in 82 games last season. But Iverson was bothered in the preseason by a sore left knee and a sprained right ankle, and Nuggets coach George Karl admits he has some concerns.

"He might get off to a slow start," Karl said. "We might have to manage him a little differently. Just as long as he's ready for most of the marathon."

Iverson played in just two of Denver's first six preseason games, and averaged a meager 4.5 points over 25.0 minutes while shooting 3-of-14 and committing eight turnovers. Iverson was healed from his knee injury, but then he said he hurt his ankle because he put too much weight on it during his recovery process.

"I couldn't drive by nobody," Iverson said of how he felt after he got hurt in an Oct. 17 game. I couldn't do nothing. I just can't move like I usually move."

--C Steven Hunter won't be able to help the Nuggets much this season, if he can at all.

Hunter played in just one Nuggets game before missing the rest of the preseason because of right knee inflammation. Hunter has been bothered by knee problems since being acquired by the Nuggets in September 2007, and played in just 19 games last season.

"He's having trouble in back-to-back games and back-to-back practices," Karl said. "The pain is probably getting annoying to him."

Hunter went so far as to visit a doctor in New York to get an additional opinion.

"It pretty much was nothing new," his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said of that visit, saying treatment plans are being discussed but surgery isn't being considered. "He's got some wear and tear."

Hunter is Denver's only 7-footer. It was thought he could have come in handy against some of the West's big frontlines.

MAIN REASON NUGGETS CAN WIN: The Nuggets are still one of the most talented teams in the NBA, with All-Stars Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson leading the way. The Nuggets finally seem committed to playing defense, a big problem in recent years.

MAIN REASON NUGGETS CAN LOSE: The Nuggets will try to improve defensively, but it doesn't help that starting center and NBA blocks champion Marcus Camby was traded. With Camby and Eduardo Najera gone, the Nuggets don't have the depth they once had on the front line.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're going to quiet a lot of people's mouths."

-- C Nene, who predicts the retooled Nuggets will exceed preseason expectations.
