Will the Nuggets trade star forward Carmelo Anthony?
Not according to his agent. Calvin Andrews said he has talked to Nuggets' officials about his client, who has been mentioned in several reports about possibly being traded to New Jersey. Andrews left those talks confident the Nuggets are "not shopping" Anthony, who just completed the first year of a five-year, $78.9 million deal.
"He was caught off-guard, getting all these calls and seeing his name in talks about getting traded," Andrews said.
Anthony has played five seasons with the Nuggets, and twice has been named to the All-NBA Third Team. But he's had a number of off-the-court problems, including being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving just before the start of this spring's playoffs.
Adding fuel to the trade reports has been Kiki Vandeweghe recently being named New Jersey's general manager. Vandeweghe was Denver's general manager when the Nuggets drafted Anthony in 2003 and was with the Nuggets during Anthony's first three seasons. Anthony signed a contract extension in the summer of 2006, two months after Vandeweghe's departure. The Nuggets said at that time they would keep Anthony up to date on key franchise moves.
"That's why he was so bent out of shape," Andrews said of Anthony hearing about trade rumors while not having any contact with the Nuggets.
Andrews, though, believes Anthony hasn't heard anything because nothing is in the works.
SEASON HIGHLIGHT: On April 10, the Nuggets came into Golden State in what was all but a must-win situation. A win would all but wrap up the West's No. 8 playoff spot and a loss might keep them home for the postseason while the Warriors became No. 8. The Nuggets trailed 37-22 after the first quarter before storming back to win 114-105, and four days later they secured a playoff berth.
TURNING POINT: When the playoff pairings came out. The Nuggets had been hoping to move up to No. 7 to face No. 2 New Orleans in the first round, but they came up one game short. Instead, the No. 8 Nuggets met the No. 1 Lakers, who continued their season-long dominance by sweeping the first-round series.
