The Nuggets will run into an old friend Monday in Philadelphia. Guard Allen Iverson is expected to make his debut for the 76ers when play host to the Nuggets. Iverson played with Denver from December 2006 until he was traded to Detroit in November 2008. Count Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony as one who believes Iverson will be a good fit for the 76ers.
"I don't think they would have picked him up if they would think it would be difficult," Anthony said.
It has been difficult for Iverson ever since he left Denver. He balked about coming off the bench for the Pistons last season, and that stint ended poorly. Then he complained about being a reserve for Memphis earlier this season, and it was mutually agreed Iverson and the Grizzlies would part ways after he played just three games.
Nuggets coach George Karl isn't looking forward to Monday's game, believing the euphoria surrounding Iverson's return could help the home team. As for the abilities of Iverson, 34, Karl believes it will be a while before he slows.
"That man, if you give him situations where he can score, I think when he's 50 he's going to be able to score," Karl said.
Iverson often has said he enjoyed his time in Denver. However, he admitted it never was the same after leaving the 76ers and having stints with three other teams.
"I always thought it was strange having another uniform," Iverson said. "I couldn't feel comfortable with another uniform."
While Iverson signed a minimum contract that is not guaranteed, Anthony, who speaks to Iverson on the phone, said that's not a problem for him.
"He's doesn't care about no money," Anthony said. "I don't think it's about the money."
NUGGETS 106, SPURS 99: The Nuggets are off to the best 20-game start in their 34-year NBA history.
Denver pushed its record to 15-5 by coming back Saturday night to beat San Antonio at the AT&T Center. The Nuggets wore down the older Spurs, outscoring them 31-23 in the fourth quarter after San Antonio had led most of the game.
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 34 points. Guard Chauncey Billups added 18 for Denver. Rookie guard Ty Lawson was a big spark in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of his 11 points.
It was the first game of a four-game trip for the Nuggets, who next play Monday at Philadelphia. Since an embarrassing 106-100 loss Nov. 29 to Minnesota, they've looking very good, going 3-0.
The Nuggets have won seven of their past eight games, with the only stumble being against the Timberwolves.
Tony Parker led San Antonio with 27 points. Tim Duncan added 26.
